Title: Operator 
Location: Columbus, MS

Main Objectives:
The Process Operator is responsible for the field operations of the Sodium Chlorate process to produce in a safe, environmentally sound, and efficient manner.

•    Responsible for ensuring safety, environmental and housekeeping standards are met.
•    Must know the location, proper operation, and inspection procedures of safety equipment at the site.  Such equipment includes safety showers, jump tanks, fire extinguishers, fire pumps and hoses, and respirators.
•    Responsible to maintain proper operating process conditions to continuously produce a quality product.
•    Responsible for compliance with all operating procedures, safety policies and procedures, environmental policies and procedures, quality policies and procedures, and site policies and procedures.
•    Correct and report all unsafe acts and conditions to the Process Foreman.
•    Accurately documents normal, upset, and special process conditions in the appropriate location as determined by management.
•    Accurately document and file documentation of raw material movements as directed by the Process Supervisor.
•    Take necessary action in unforeseen situations such as shutdowns, equipment failures, and emergencies in order to secure the process and correct the situation.
•    Perform laboratory analysis of process materials and interpret analysis results in order to maintain process chemistry and final product quality within required specifications.
•    Will prepare equipment for maintenance, including initiation and execution of appropriate and relevant permits (Hot Work, Lock Out/Tag Out, Line Breaking, and Confined Space).
•    Must possess an adequate level of general knowledge of adjacent processes of the site.
•    Ensure that cleanliness of plant is well maintained.
•    Must possess theoretical and practical detailed knowledge of all equipment in the process, particularly the salt evaporator, crystallizers, electrolytic cells and the dry ends.
•    Report accidents, errors, near-misses, and other unexplained occurrences to the Chief Technician, or Process Foreman.
•    Will provide training to non-qualified personnel as needed.
•    Will work a shift schedule as assigned by the Process Supervisor.
•    Will be able to safely operate transportation machinery relevant to job assignment such as forklift, rail mover (locomotive), etc.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Should the Process Technician upgrade to Chief Technician, the upgrading Process Technician will have the same supervisory responsibilities as the Chief Technician.

     Safety Responsibilities:

•    Will be in contact with several different chemicals and will know how to work safely with those chemicals.
•    Will be responsible to follow all plant wide safety procedures which includes but is not limited to wearing (and maintaining) specified safety clothing, equipment and communication devices.
•    Participate in Process Hazard Analysis.
•    Advise maintenance or contractors when they are working in hazardous areas and issue Permit to Work for the safe execution of maintenance or construction activities.
•    Will be required to assist in the development and implementation of the Process Safety Management System.
•    Will be required to participate in plant safety programs and initiatives.

Quality Responsibilities:

•    Responsible for carrying out all phases of the day to day job activities so as to meet or exceed applicable quality requirements as defined in the Department ISO procedures and QMS procedures.
•    Will play a key role in maintaining the company's Total Quality Program as required by the Plant Management or by changes in the process.
•    This position is duly authorized to act in the capacity of the Sodium Chlorate Chief Technician position when so upgraded to that position.


Education, Training and/or Experience:

•    High School Diploma or GED equivalent or 2 year Chemical Industry experience.

•    Prefer associates or equivalent from two-year College or technical school; or three years or more related experience and/or training.

Communication Skills:

•    Ability to read, analyze and interpret general procedures.

•    Ability to write reports and present information to co-workers and peers.

•    Ability to communicate with others on different job levels.

•    Good penmanship skills preferred.

•    Maintain communications with the Chief Technician through the various communication systems in the plant.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages,
ratios and proportions to practical situations.  Be able to understand and comprehend
the English and metric conversations systems.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

•    Forklift Operator's Certificate preferred.

•    First Aid and CPR Certificate preferred.

•    Valid Driver’s License required.

Other Skills and Abilities:

•    Run chemical lab tests.

•    Utilize the Distributive Control System (DCS) to monitor and control the process via electronic and pneumatic instrumentation. This includes retrieving and entering process information and taking manual control of the process through the DCS. The understanding of audible/visual alarms and typewritten reports generated by the DCS is also necessary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand,
sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, hear.  In addition, the employee performs the following tasks each shift while wearing company required PPE: 1) Walk approximately three miles - distance could increase depending on plant conditions, and 2) Ascend/Descend multiple flights of stairs.  

The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. Due to potential exposure to hazardous materials, the employee must be able to sense exposure (feel the effects) on all parts of the body.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or
move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color
vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
